Status Updates

I’ve managed to get a good bit behind on various status updates, so I’ll be trying to remedy that over the next few days.

As a general status update: I’m still alive.

  1. Hi Zach,

I have exactly the same you described for the jaw aligment, was wondering how did that go, fully recovered? Would appreciate if you gave me some thoughts about your recovery process, how long it took, and if you had to wear a splint or something to retrain yourself in biting,

  2. It went well. My jaw is fully recovered.

The recovery process was tiered; for four weeks I couldn’t chew, and then for an additional two I could only chew soft foods (e.g. white bread, but not the crust). After that, there weren’t any restrictions on what I could eat beyond those due to my braces (e.g. no nuts), but my jaw muscles seemed to easily tire for two or so more weeks.

I didn’t have to wear a splint or anything, but was on pain killers for a few days. It was sort of the honor system; my doctor said something to the effect of “Don’t chew, or you’ll re-brake your jaw,” so I didn’t.

  3. Hi Zach, one last question.
I have heard that nerve recovery can take a long time, or you might just never feel your chin and lip the way you did before.

Any comments on that? How long did your feeling of chin and lip take?

Thank you very much! All these answers are helping me understand the surgery better.

  4. I had a spot between my lower lip and my chin that felt funny for a while. It felt a lot like novacaine wearing off, but stretched out over several weeks. Everything seems fine now (and has for a while).
